Individual sessions vary in length depending on your personal needs. Usually the initial session is 1.5 hours in length. Subsequent session lengths are aligned with your goals.
The initial session for a couple is usually 1.5 to 2 hours in length. This allows time to complete an initial assessment, discuss your counselling goals, and begin to develop a plan for implementing changes to achieve results. Subsequent sessions are usually 1.5 hours in length, but depend on the needs of the couple.
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.”
When one or more family members are experiencing difficulties, all family members are impacted. For this reason, sometimes it is helpful to conduct sessions with other members of the family present so that connections and dynamics in the family system can be more deeply explored and resolved. Initial session is 2 hours in length. Subsequent sessions are usually 1.5 hours in length.
Depending on your unique needs, at times referrals to other professional services are appropriate. I assist in obtaining information regarding treatment options (location, costs, programming, model of approach, etc.) and help you to complete the referral process to your program of choice.
At times telephone or Skype counselling is a viable option for individual counselling. I offer this service only after we have met at least once face to face.
Since each person, couple, and family is unique, the length and frequency of counselling sessions varies. In my experience, some people can indeed accomplish what they want in six sessions or less. In most cases this is a matter of resolving a specific challenge and/or getting back on track. Usually a long-standing challenge requires extended treatment, but in many cases it can still be settled in short term psychotherapy (under 20 sessions). Some people resolve their initial challenge in a few sessions but then decide to spend more time to resolve others, or return for another challenge at another time. Some others decide to do long term psychotherapy. A number of these are working through and overcoming the effects of trauma, dis-ease, or any malady that is effecting the quality of their lives. Others are investing in personal growth and increased self-awareness for the sake of a richer and more fulfilling life. For many people long term therapy produces increases on a variety of levels: life satisfaction and meaning, earning power, physical health, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, intimacy, and service to the greater good.
The conditions of modern life, by creating a great variety of stressors as well as unprecedented opportunities for choice, make quality psychotherapy a valuable resource.
You are in counselling only as long as it takes for you to achieve what you hope to accomplish; until the outcomes match your goals. Feel free to experiment with what works for you.
“You cannot discover new oceans
unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
Oftentimes, counselling can be a journey of discovery; we stay open to where the journey takes us. We may not know where we are going for a long time. But we will know it when we get there. The open sea can be awesome, awe-full and liberating!
